As we get closer to the end of the school year, I keep thinking of a word – commemorate.
I am not sure if it is that I am being more and more reflective of what the last few years have been like mostly because of COVID-19 but also because of political tensions and new state bills. Or I could just be getting a little older (ahem…) and taking more time to just reflect on life more.
Simple Ways to Commemorate the School Year
Whether you’re a student, teacher, or parent, the end of the school year can be a time of mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s a time to celebrate the hard work and successes of the year, but on the other hand, it can be a time of uncertainty and anxiety about what the future holds.
1. Create a Scrapbook or Memory Box
One way to commemorate the end of the school year is to create a scrapbook or memory box filled with mementos from the year. This could include photos, report cards, artwork, or other items that represent important moments or achievements from the school year. This is a great way to preserve memories and reflect on the progress made throughout the year.
2. Hold a Class or School Wide Celebration
Another way to commemorate the end of the school year is to hold a class or school-wide celebration. This could be a party, picnic, or other event where students, teachers, and parents can come together to celebrate the end of the year and say goodbye to each other. This is a great way to foster a sense of community and create positive memories that will last beyond the school year.
3. Find Time to Reflect and then Feed Forward
Finally, taking time to reflect and set goals for the future is a great way to commemorate the end of the school year. Whether you’re a student or teacher, taking some time to think about what you’ve learned and what you want to achieve in the future can be a powerful way to mark the end of the year. This can help you stay focused and motivated for the future and ensure that you’re making progress towards your goals.
Students Love to Leave a Legacy
1. Student Time Capsule
One way for students to commemorate their school year and leave a legacy for the next class is by creating a time capsule. The students can gather and decide on items that represent the school year and their experiences in it. This could include photos, school projects, mementos from field trips, notes from classmates, or any other items that they feel represent their year.
Once the items have been chosen, the students can create a time capsule and bury it in a designated location on school grounds. If burying something on school property is a no-go, I might recommend making a tube or ask the Art Department if any students want to make something that could hold the memories and be displayed in the Media Center or classroom.
2. Documentary
In addition to the time capsule, students can also create a video or presentation that documents their school year. They can interview teachers and classmates, share photos and videos, and talk about their favorite memories and experiences. This video can be shared with the next class to pass on knowledge and experiences.
Whether you have a time capsule, letters, or documentary, give space for students to create something for the next class of students so they can learn about the experiences of the previous class and get a glimpse into what their school year was like. This can help to build a sense of community and connection within the school, as well as provide valuable insights and lessons for the next class to learn from.
Either way, I see you and hear your stories of the challenges, the accomplishments, and the human connections that have been made in your learning environments. There is a lot to remember and to celebrate. Are you taking time to commemorate them? If so, tell me more.
See You Real Soon,
Erin
