I have said this before, and I will said again. I am not big into New Year’s resolutions. I try to make changes or improvements in my life when I need it. With that being said, I do respect that others do embrace resolutions at this time of year.
Last year, I decided to try the idea of picking a word that would be a theme for the year. Do you want to know what that word was for me? I entered 2020 with the theme of chilling out. Go ahead and laugh. It is pretty comical. Needless to say, it was a tough year to try and tackle my anxiety and find more time to just enjoy the day-to-day of life.
So instead of picking a word or theme and setting big resolutions, I am going to create a basic guide to live my best life. Here are some ideas for what I am going to remind myself of this year:
#5 Set a Fair Tone
Try not to put too much pressure on yourself, especially at the beginning of a new calendar year. It really does not serve its purpose if you start overwhelming yourself before you even get started. My favorite thing is to let myself just daydream about the possibilities of a new year.
#4 Dream and Look Forward to Things
Create a wish list. Since I mentioned not putting too much pressure on yourself for #5, this list is meant to be something fun. Go ahead and just dream. My wish list has anything from small to medium to large goals or wishes. Don’t put the pressure on yourself to complete everything on the wish list this year. Just get excited about the potential of things to come is really all that matters, even if you end up just crossing off one or two things at the end of the year.
#3 Read
I love to read. I always think it is important to get lost in a book whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. Heck, I just got lost in the new Ina Garten cookbook. I’ve already found several new recipes that I cannot wait to try. 😊 Reading keeps your brain sharp, opens you to new worlds, and helps reduce stress.
#2 Be a Priority
Make sure that you find time to unwind throughout the year. A good friend of mine reminded me that we constantly make sure to keep our technical devices charged, so why not do the same for ourselves. Now more than ever it is so important to get the rest you need, to exercise, and do the things you need to boost that immune system. Make yourself a priority this year. Not only will you benefit from it, but so will those around you.
#1 Gratitude
Be thankful every day. This costs nothing, but Brother David Steindl-Randl says be grateful is very valuable. Try to make sure to tell people how much they mean to you. Take in every moment, “it is a gift.” Unfortunately, last year taught us all that we should not take each other or the moments in life for granted. Have a grateful living.
A lot of people have been talking about how hindsight is 2020, so it makes sense for us to move forward with what we have learned and continue to exude gratitude. My wish for all of you this year is that things will start getting better and that you have a renewed hope for this new calendar year.
