I was recently asked to present to student teachers within a school district. These student teachers are about to graduate and are overwhelmed with finishing up school, fulfilling the teacher certification requirements, finalizing their internship, and interviewing for a full-time teaching job. There was a mixture of anxiety and enthusiasm in the room as they start to prepare for this professional journey.
My motto of “Embrace the Crazy” was used several times because I really do believe that it is important for educators to buckle up and get ready for the ride. For these young and enthusiastic minds to be open to embracing the craziness of education, we had to discuss their anxieties about teaching their first year on their own. Here is a list of most of their concerns:
- Classroom Management
- Being Observed/Evaluated
- Parent Communication
- Grading
- Fitting In
I gathered with these student teachers as a whole group and we talked about ways to attack these concerns head on so that they felt empowered next year. I am going to dedicate the next 5 blogs to sharing our conversation along with resources and advice for each one. If you want to participate, please make sure to subscribe to Inspired Education to follow this series on first year teachers.
In the meantime, I am curious as to what you would suggest to all the new teachers out there who will be getting ready to be in the classroom next year. Please comment below so that we can support our new educators will real world examples and suggestions to being successful in the best profession.
See You Real Soon,
Erin
